Multiplication and Arrays

In the words of a struggling math student in 5th grade after seeing an array "So that's what multiplication means?". Don't underestimate the power of a visual.

Arrays in the Classroom

Arrays in the Real World

Students quickly learn how skip counting and multiplication are used in real life to count cupcakes, donuts, eggs, and more. Watch this slideshow and/or create your own from online and real-life images.

Strategies for Understanding

The following order is suggested for understanding multiplication:
  1. Multiplication on a Number Line
  2. Arrays
  3. Skip Counting & Songs
  4. Advanced Arrays
  5. Using Known Facts to Determine Unknown Facts

Strategies for Recall

After students have comfortably developed several strategies to determine every multiplication fact, you can use these activities to help improve recall.
  • Multiplication Clue Cards
  • Ghost Cards
  • Dot Card Bingo
  • Games

Extending Skip Counting using CCSS

The ultimate goal of skip counting and/or arrays is to help students consider the possible factors of any number. Extend the real-life array and skip counting by asking the questions below.

Picture
  • How many popsicles are in the box?
  • What are the possible arrays for this box of popsicles?
  • Which array or arrays are most likely for this box? State your reasoning.
  • Do you think the popsicle make would create a box for 1 row of 18 popsicles? Why or why not?
